If you visit this place on Google Map you will find it labelled as 'Torry Community Garden'. We encountered a local (name not asked, nor given), a reserved but friendly gent who told just act it was not a community garden but that council will allocate spaces for people wishing to use space as allotments.
Our informant told us there was some stealing and vandalism in the area but this is presumably ameliorated by the fact that the fences on the gardens are high and there are many first floors overlooking it.
Looking back on the images, I note one thing: it was a beautiful day! (22 September 2019).
A record of field trips and other explorations of a particular urban design element - the internal reserve - a 'pocket park' surrounded on all sides by residential housing but accessible by pedestrian pathways from the street. They are exclusive, secluded, sometimes neglected, sometimes celebrated, suburban spaces. This blog welcomes contributions: comments, images, memorabilia. Please email nicholsd@unimelb.edu.au
